MOTHERS' DAY FOR CANCER AWARENESS
It
is October again, not only marked for cancer awareness, internationally, but also
that month we celebrate the lives of our dear mothers (especially in Malawi).
This year like any other year, messages and songs of dedication were awash on
radio stations, television, newspapers and on social media sites celebrating the
lives of our mothers. That was not bad as we had to spoil our beautiful mothers
for the job they did and that they continue to do for us.
But
couldn’t we change the tune and let this year’s Mothers-day be used as a day to
promote awareness on cancer? Breast and cervical cancer continue to claim the
lives of many women in our country. Couldn’t we use this opportunity to beat
the drum louder and make waves that could reach the uncharted waters?

There
is a lot that could be done on this day to make sure the message on cancer
awareness reached the areas that it has never been before. It is no secret that
in some rural areas there are a lot of women who have never heard a message on
cervical or breast cancer screening, let alone getting to know if the disease
indeed exists.

They
say information empowers and only the informed are better placed to make
rational decisions. The same impact we could achieve with the message that
could be shared on Mothers-day celebrations. The little information that could
be made available to people in rural areas using the mass media platforms could
go a long way in saving the life of that young girl, the middle-aged mother or
that elderly woman in our community.
It
is not too late to make a change. We have to join hands and use the Mothers'-day
celebrations as a benchmark for change in the fight against cancer in our
country.
Take
the initiative to spread the message, convince more girls and women to go for
consultation and screening on cervical and breast cancer. Our hospitals may not
have the resources to carter for everyone else, but we have the people and the
message that we can share for free and help transform the lives of our dear
women.
We
have to do this for the love of our Mothers; for the love of our Women.
Mothers-day for cancer awareness; make a change.
